Climbing Wall

When you drive down Mt. Baker Road and onto camp property, one of the first things you see in the field to your left is our Climbing Tower and Zipline.

Did you know that the Orkila Climbing Tower is actually one of the tallest structures in the San Juans?

It also has climbing routes on both the inside and outside of the tower, so rain or shine you can climb!

We also have an array of routes that provide an appropriate challenge for climbers of any experience level.

Spring OEE Is Here!

Kids are at camp, kids are at camp, kids are at camp!!

How is this possible, you might ask? Though it is still a few months away from summer camp, our Spring Outdoor Environmental Education season is in full swing. The staff have been working loooong days getting ready for the thousands of children who will visit Camp Orkila this spring.

The ga-ga pit has been crowded with enthusiastic players and spectators, the anenomes in the touch tank have been getting attention from curious learners, and the sun has been shining down on all of our campers and staff! All is right with the world again.

Wreckage!!!

One of our most popular activities at Orkila is Wreckage. What is Wreckage?

Some would say that it's essentially Dodgeball, however at Orkila it is so so so much more.

Wreckage is Dodgeball but with 100 times more spirit; participants often create cheers or chants, paint their faces, and dawn their unit colors.

We play wreckage at camp to have fun, but also to come together and show unit pride as well as camp spirit.

Staff Spotlight: Tessa Nesbit

Welcome to the continuation of our 2012 Staff Spotlight Series! Periodically we will introduce you to 1 of the amazing people who will be at camp on the 2012 Summer Staff. If you see someone you know here--and especially if you see someone you don't know--be sure to clap your hands and twinkle your fingers as we keep getting ready for an awesome season.

This week, we are proud to announce the return of the one, the only... Tessa Nesbit!

Orkila: So Tessa, we're all dying to know, what's your history with camp? What will you be doing this year?
Tessa: This will be my 9th summer at Camp Orkila! I can't get enough of this magical place. My grandpa was even a counselor here! My first summers at camp were spent being an Olympian in Mt. O, and then moving on to the teen programs, Leadership Development Instituted (LDI) and Counselor In Training (CIT). As a staff member, I've been girly and burly with the Sahales, having way too much fun with the Goodes, lived on the beach with Mt. O and then in the forest with the Loowits. This summer, I am beyond excited to be a Director of the CIT program!

Orkila: And what have you been up to lately? Where are you right now!?
Tessa: After many, many years as a student, I am finally a college graduate! As of March 15 I am a graduate of the University of Washington, and life could not be better! I'm about to embark on an adventure around the West Coast visiting friends, many of who are from camp! If things go well, I'll hopefully start some dork dances, campfires, and face painting along the way. I also hope to bike through the Redwoods, surf in the Pacific, and eat as many avocados as possible. After that, the adventure will continue at Orkila!

Orkila: What’s your favorite part of camp? What keeps you coming back?
Tessa: The people are my favorite part of camp! I've become friends with the most inspirational and amazing people at Orkila, and I have become a better person because of them. From campers to staff, Orkila has such an incredible community! But I have to admit, being able to sing about anything and everything at any time of day also keeps me coming back. Where else can I sing about black socks, made-up words, and princesses!?

Orkila: Thanks Tessa, and in closing, why can’t you ride “my little red wagon”?
Tessa: It's stuck in the swamp after Get Wet Get Dirty!
Mud! Mud! Mud mud mud!!!

Orkila: Mud mud mud!!

Skate!

Did you know that Camp Orkila has a Skateboard Camp? Skate Camp is open to boys AND girls entering grades 7-9 in the fall of all skill levels. The skaters spend the morning at the Orcas Island Skatepark - designed by Grindline Skateparks Inc and nationally renowned. In the afternoon, skaters participate in traditional camp activities such as high ropes or open rec but also have the opportunity to skate our wood ramps and elements set up in our Program Shelter. The Program Shelter skatepark serves as our rainy day alternative to a morning at the Orcas Skatepark.

We know you love camp and I've seen you wearing your old shirts around town. This is what we received, so far, when we asked to see what you wore on Y Camp Shirt Day! Thanks, John and Pulju.

If you love Orkila, keep wearing those shirts and strike up a conversation with anyone who asks!

The Zipline!

Happy Birthday, Orkila Zipline! Around this time last year, our zipline was all geared up and ready to go!

After a year of zippers, the zipline at Orkila is still going strong and looking forward to many more years to come.

Mt. Constitution

The highest point in the San Juan Islands is atop Orcas Island's own Mt. Constitution. Located in Moran State Park, Mt. Constitution stands at 2,399 feet tall.

Orkila campers involved in teen leadership programs typically have the option of hiking Mt. Constitution for sunrise starting from our property at Twin Lakes.

The view is nothing short of breath-taking.

Low Ropes

At Orkila we have an expansive Low Ropes course within our forest. A Low Ropes course consists of several elements that a facilitator uses to run team building exercises with a group. Although the name would imply it, not every Low Ropes element involves rope. Some highlights include: the Whale Watch element which is a giant platform on which a group must balance themselves, the Frog Hop which is a series of small stumps that may be used to have a group strategically line up on, and the Nitro Crossing that consists of a rope that participants use to swing from platform to platform.

Expedition Traditions

Our teen expedition programs are an unforgettable experience; biking, sailing, or kayaking around the San Juan Islands. Participants walk away from their expeditions with a huge sense of accomplishment. In order for a trip to be successful everyone needs to pitch in to help set up camp, prepare meals, and maintain the equipment.

A bilge pump is used to get water that may have ended up in a boat, out of it.

At the end of trip, participants return to camp and ring the bell underneath our dock to celebrate their trip.

Group Games

A huge part of spending time together as a cabin is playing together. Play supports the development of social skills and facilitates laughter.

Orkila staff have a huge knowledge base of group games as well as very creative minds that they put to good use with our campers on a daily basis.

Do you or your camper have a favorite camp game?
