Happy Halloween!

At Orkila… it's kind of like Halloween every day. At any time, on any day, any one could be dressed up as… well, ANYTHING! Here are some favorite costumes created this summer by our staff, can you guess what they are?

Happy Halloween everyone!

Water Ride of Wonder

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink," is an old saying that is not exactly true, because anybody that's ever been around horses would know if the horse didn't want to go to water then it wouldn't.

Horsemaster campers get the opportunity to canter along the sandy beach, and if they want they get to enter the wee bit chilly Salish Sea. It is a little known fact that horses love the water, and enjoy going for a dip in the water!

Unit Pride

"Pride is a personal commitment. It is an attitude which separates excellence from mediocrity."
Unknown

When YMCA Camp Orkila has an all camp event or an exciting game of wreckage, units show their colors and their spirit! Whether it's face paint or unit cheers, every ounce of enthusiasm has a huge impact on the atmosphere of camp and makes camp an exciting place!

Crafts & Arts

"Art can't deny craft, but refuses to acknowledge it.
In the end they are still brothers."

YMCA Camp Orkila has a fantastic craft shoppe filled with paints and pottery, string and scissors, not to mention the amazing Arts and Earth staff ready to lend a helping hand whenever necessary!

Surfs Up! Connections are formed and strengthened at the Westfield Camping Conference

A dynamic cast of Camp Orkila, Camp Colman and Seattle Camping services All-stars heads down to San Diego for the annual Westfield Camping Conference.

The Westfield Camping Conference serves as a chance for YMCA directors, administrators and program leaders from across the West Coast to gather and share ideas, struggles, and visions. This year The YMCA of Greater Seattle was well represented by (From Left to right) Dave Affolter, Magill Lange, Alicia Hogl, Lynda Sanders, Beth Wangen, Kelly Heusinkveld, Laura Bruhns, and of course the man behind the camera Dimitri Stankevich.

Upon arrival Sunday afternoon, the influencial group was treated to a lesson at Camp Surf, and was able to spend quality time together surfing in the sun, sharing laughs and strengthening bonds. From there, they were off to YMCA Camp Marston for workshops, networking, discussions and open forums with other camp professionals from the region.

Some great new ideas and connections came home from the conference on Wednesday, but perhaps most importantly according to several who attended, stronger friendships and appreciation for each other.

At Camp Orkila we are proud to be represented by such caring, thoughtful and passionate leaders. And since it's camp after all, we are glad they still embrace the chance let loose and get silly when the opportunity arises.

Dance the Night Away

2011 Summer Memories

In case you missed the video from our values awards ceremony, or wanted to see it again... here is the 2011 Summer Memories video!

The 2011 Values Awards Ceremony!

This Saturday, October 1st, over 800 people gathered in Seattle's historic Town Hall for our annual values awards ceremony.

At Camp Orkila and Camp Colman we structure our programming around the Y's four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. The Y defines these values as essential traits for one's success and the strength of our community. We hope not only to teach our campers about these core values but that they will take what they learn at camp back home with them and into the future.

Each recipient was voted on by their peers at the end of their stay at camp as exemplifying one of the core values. We were delighted to celebrate these individuals with their friends and families on Saturday

As one of Camp Colman's counselors Zawdie Terry said, "The future is looking bright."
